In this 1939 movie, part of the series starring Bonita Granville, Nancy is a sassy and cute girl detective
who doesn’t let anyone tell her what to do. She solidifies Nancy's style on the screen as being hats, plaid and classic, feminine pieces.
Nancy’s signature piece is always a simple beige hat.
Nancy wears lots of peter
pan collars, as well as frilly detailing.
She achieves the slim but
feminine silhouette of that time by wearing her shirts tucked into
high-waisted, midi-length,
slightly flowy skirts.
Nancy is a big fan of
plaid.
As in the 1977 tv series, she
frequently sports capes.
Nancy keeps her hair curled and held out of her eyes by
headbands with bows, adding girly flair.
Nancy wears badass dark
polish on her nails, and protects them with driving gloves.
Bonita Granville’s Nancy
is charming and plucky, and while it can perhaps be laid on a bit thick,
there’s no denying that she’s an entertaining watch and a great example of Girl
Detective spunk.
Nancy Drew... Reporter streams free on Youtube, or is available on Amazon as part of a collection with all of Granville's Drew movies. I'm working on some Reporter sets over on my Polyvore.
